The Food Planning and Monitoring Unit (FPMU) provides secretarial support
to the Food Planning and Monitoring Committee (FPMC). It assists it in
monitoring the overall food situation and analyzing statistics on production,
estimated demand and availability of food stock, so that it can fulfill its
terms of reference which are to monitor the overall food situation and advise
the Government on the steps to take with respect to overall food management,
food security and related actions.
It has an authorized strength of 18
professionals to perform its functions. Activities of FPMU are divided into four
major
groups: policy advisory services, research, analysis and global/macro policy
linkages; food production monitoring, early warning and producer incentives;
market monitoring, food operation planning and budget provisioning; and food
consumption and nutrition monitoring and targeted intervention.
For a more
efficient, integrated and
analytical
support to the FPMC, the
FPMU
has established an inter-ministerial coordination
mechanism through a Food Policy Working Group (FPWG) and Thematic Research Teams (TRTs).
